Old Boy Sir Ian McKellen Receives Honorary Degree

Distinguished Old Boy Sir Ian McKellen has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Cambridge.

He was one of seven leading figures who were honoured by the university in a special ceremony in the Senate House. Wearing scarlet gowns and black bonnets, the graduands were presented with their degrees by the university’s chancellor, Lord Sainsbury.

Sir Ian, who read English at St Catharine’s College after leaving Bolton School as School Captain in the 1950s, was made a Doctor of Letters in honour of his lengthy career as an actor and director.
