Pupils Shine at Greater Manchester School Games

Tuesday, 24 March 2015

Pupils in the Girls’ Division Junior School and Boys’ Division Senior School recently took part in the Greater Manchester School Games.

The aim of the School Games is to further revive competitive sport in schools, harnessing the inspirational power of the Olympics and Paralympics to motivate young people to participate. The Schools Games runs across different levels: in-school tournaments lead to local competitions between different schools, with the winners of these ultimately progressing to the regional multi-sport festival.

The Senior Boys had won a place in the Water Polo tournament, held at Manchester Aquatics Centre. Both Senior Boys and Junior Girls also won local competitions to take part in the Swimming competitions.

The U13 Water Polo Team faced off against Beech House School, The Blue Coat School, St Ambrose, and Manchester Grammar School. After a triumphant four matches, including emphatic wins over St Ambrose and Manchester Grammar School, the Bolton School boys were crowned the champions overall!

The Junior Girls’ Swimming Team fared exceptionally well. Bethany Shum, Caitlin Nuttall, Martha Brennan and Martha Halford competed in four events each: their own individual 25m race, the freestyle relay, the medley relay, and the canon relay. Each of the girls swam well and did not allow the magnitude of the venue or occasion to phase them in any way. When the final results were revealed, the girls were announced as the gold medal winners in the Primary Girls category with a marvellous 46 points! The girls were delighted to be awarded their gold medals, showing that they were the fastest Year 5 girls in the whole of Greater Manchester!

The Senior Boys’ Swimming team took on tough competition in the Secondary Boys’ category. They eventually came in fifth place with 25 points.

These were excellent achievements for all of the students who took part, particularly because the standard was so high at this year’s Winter Games.
