School Hosts Rugby 7s Tournament

Thursday, 27 March 2014

Kirkham Grammar School has been crowned winners of Bolton School’s inaugural U15s’ Rugby 7s’ Tournament. They beat Hutton Grammar, 22-5 in the Cup Final.  The Plate Final was won by QEGS Blackburn, who overcame Bolton School A Team 19-7 and the Bowl Final was won by Rivington and Blackrod after a 31-5 victory over Bolton School B Team.

There was some great rugby played over the course of the day in the 7 minutes each way games. Other schools from across the North-West that took part included AKS, Bury Grammar School (A and B teams), Audenshaw and Rossall School.

Cups and medals were awarded by Hendre Fourie of Sale Sharks, who is a former England international whose career ended prematurely. Summing up the day, he concluded: “7s is a different game from 15-a-side rugby and demands different skills and different levels of fitness. It has been good to see players aiming for the open spaces and not getting bogged down in the physical stuff.  There has been some great handling of the ball, some great offloading and boys have been good at finding space. Congratulations to all the teams that have taken part today.”
