School Jazz Band Performs at Kneller Hall

Wednesday, 13 July 2016

Bolton School Jazz Band was delighted to spend a day packed with activities at Kneller Hall, the Royal Military School of Music in Twickenham. The band was invited to perform as part of Kneller Hall’s Summer Concerts in the Park season as a result of winning a Gold Award at the NCBF Finals earlier this year. This was a very prestigious event, made all the more special by the attendance of the Countess of Wessex.

A large, enthusiastic and supportive audience thoroughly enjoyed listening to, amongst other items, Birdland, Mas Que Nada, Hit the Bricks, Norwegian Wood, The Girl From Ipanema and Born To Be Wild. The band was directed by Mr Forgrieve with Miss Deady playing a vital role on trumpet. Prior to the evening concert, the pupils enjoyed two meals, dining amongst military personnel, participated in a rehearsal led by Deputy Chief Instructor Captain Evan Frost, were given a tour of the site, the museum and beautiful chapel, and attended a very informative careers talk given by Captain Tony Williams. Particular thanks must go to Lance Sergeant Dean Nixon who was pivotal in making the necessary arrangements and for performing on tenor saxophone with the band. Lance Corporal Matt Austin (tenor sax) and Musician Jacob (bass guitar) were also splendid additions to the Jazz Band. When the band finished its performance they were able to listen to a concert given by the Band of the Parachute Regiment, the Band of the Royal Logistics Corps, the Military Wives' Choir and musicians from Rendle VC Troop of the Royal Military School of Music, complete with fanfare trumpeters and fireworks. Many of the officers attending the concert were highly complimentary about the Jazz Band; very positive feedback was received from the audience, and Kneller Hall is keen to develop further links with the School in the future.
