"There is no doubt this is a very special school with fantastic facilities and fantastic teachers who make all the difference. It's just a shame that every school in the country cannot be like Bolton School."

School Proud to Sponsor Bolton 2012 Games

Thursday, 30 August 2012

“Bolton School is proud to have been a sponsor of the Bolton 2012 Games and to have played a small part in helping make them such a success. It has been – and still is - a wonderful summer of sport, which I am certain will have inspired many people, both young and old, to get involved in physical activity. The Bolton 2012 Games have offered the chance for young people across the borough to take part in activities and to have fun trying a wide range of sports, many of which they may not have had the chance to sample before. We felt the ethos of the Bolton Games chimed with our own ambition to ensure that young people are exposed to a wide range of activities and opportunities as possible in order that they can find and reach their full potential. I was also delighted to see two Old Boltonians, Sir Philip Craven and Sir Ian McKellen, playing such a prominent role in the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games,” said Mr Philip Britton, Headmaster of the Boys’ Division.

The Bolton 2012 Games came to a close with a ceremony which saw Olympic silver medallist and Bolton’s own boxing sensation, Amir Khan, present medals and awards to girls and boys who had excelled in the Games.  He said: “It’s been wonderful to see so many youngsters learning about new sports and having a go at things they would otherwise never get the chance to. They should be proud of themselves.”

The event was held at Bolton Lads and Girls’ Club and it paid tribute to over 2,000 children who had taken part in more than 40 sporting activities over the summer, including wrestling, swimming, football, rugby, athletics, golf, cycling and many more.  The ceremony looked back on some of the highlights of the event and gave special thanks to the volunteers who made it possible.

Bolton Games 2012 was inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games and was organised by Bolton Council and Bolton Lads and Girls Club. Other sponsors included the University of Bolton, Kearsley Academy and Bolton at Home.

The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Guy Harkin, added: “There is a myth that there’s nothing to do for young people during the school summer holidays and these Games have blown it out of the water.”
