Classics

At Bolton School Girls' Division pupils have the opportunity to study three different classical subjects: Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Civilisation. There are also many opportunities for off-site study and learning through extracurricular activities: visits to Roman sites in the UK such as Chester and York or trips abroad to Rome, Pompeii and Sicily.

At the end of Year 7 girls can chose to study either two or three languages in Year 8 and many choose to study Latin at that point. They will continue their study of Latin into Year 9 and can then decide if they wish to pursue Latin to GCSE. Classical Greek GCSE is offered from Year 10 and it is a fast-paced course for those who relish linguistic challenge and enjoy the mystique of a new alphabet.

Both Latin and Classical Greek can be studied at A Level and at this juncture we also offer Classical Civilisation A Level for those who prefer to learn about the ancient world through the medium of translated texts. In most years we have girls who aspire to study Classics or Classical Civilisation at the UK's top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
