The Science Department comprises three disciplines, Biology,
Chemistry and Physics and it currently has thirteen members of
teaching staff as well as six technicians.
In accordance with National Curriculum guidelines, all girls
follow a broad and balanced science curriculum until the end of
Year 11. Years 7-8 follow a scheme devised by the Department to be
relevant and stimulating as well as a good preparation for GCSE.
Since September 2007 all pupils in Year 9 begin to study the three
Separate Sciences for the AQA examination board; in Years 10 and 11
some pupils opt for Science plus Additional Science.
The specifications followed give pupils the opportunity to
acquire a systematic body of scientific knowledge, to develop
experimental and investigative abilities as well as an
understanding of the economic, ethical and social implications of
the technological and environmental applications of science.
Extra-curricular activities include visits, entries in national
competitions, and Science Club whose members work towards external
awards. We also have links with the Environment Club: its members
plant bowls of bulbs to display on windowsills in the Spring Term.
During the rest of the year the Department supplies plants for the
corridors from the greenhouse.
