There are always plenty of opportunities to enjoy more art in
the Art Department!
This year, the Year 7 Art Club designed the School Christmas
card while the Year 8 Club produced relief prints and the Year 9
Club made card-constructed Mehndi Hands. In addition, we have run a
"Cow Parade" Club throughout the year, where life-sized wooden cows
have been decorated in arty ways! Clubs are run on a weekly basis
and, in the Autumn Term, numbers have to be limited to make the
groups manageable at lunchtime. Everyone is welcome, whatever their
ability.
Each September, all years have the opportunity to enter "The Big
Draw" competition, where simple themes are set as starting points
for creative work. The competition is part of the national "Big
Draw" event which is designed to encourage participation in
drawing. The numbers of girls taking part doubled in the first two
years that we ran the competition. We also enter as many other
competitions as possible throughout the year.
For the GCSE groups, there is the opportunity to gain a place on
our art workshops, which are held at the weekends and during the
holidays at an artist's studio and in school. There are limited
places available but it is a chance to further develop their skills
and improve their portfolio. The studios are open before school
every day for "Early Birds" art sessions and, this year, we started
after-school sessions as well.
The "Art News" noticeboard in the Department also displays
opportunities for all girls to enter competitions and to attend
gallery workshops and exhibitions both in the North West and
nationally.
Each year, GCSE and A Level students have the opportunity to
display their work to the public in the "Best of Bolton" Art
Showcase at the University of Bolton. AS students are also offered
the opportunity to work alongside children at the Bolton Lads' and
Girls' Club, helping Art staff to deliver workshops in school and
at the Club.
