The Girls' Division has an excellent reputation for serving the
wider community. Girls gladly give their time to help others and to
organise fundraising activities for those less fortunate than
themselves.
The variety of activities in which our students take part range
from helping in hospices and youth centres, to organising
individual, class and whole school fundraising events, often for
charities which are of particular interest to them
individually.
The school's chosen 'link school' charity is SKCV (Street Kids
Community Villages). Based in Vijayawada, India, the charity has
become a particular favourite among the girls who are constantly
trying to find new and exciting ways to raise funds for the
children who have lived on the streets of India. In December 2005,
twenty Sixth Form students and four members of staff visited the
SKCV village. "The children were so open and giving, despite not
having much to call their own, that it was impossible not to adore
them," says Sheridan, Year 12. "Saying goodbye to them was one of
the hardest things I've ever done." We are returning to India in
December 2011 with thirty-two students. Our chosen local charity is
"Fort Alice" for which we raised over £400 this year.
Having raised approximately £17,000 for charity in the academic
year of 2010-2011 we are constantly seeking ways in which to equal
or even surpass this impressive total!
This year, Year 7 focused on local charities while Year 8
collected funds for the Guide Dog Association, our Name a Puppy
appeal. Year 9 took part in a week of fund-raising activities for
"Children in Need", the Year 10 Christmas Post raised over £1,300
for the Manchester Children's Burns Unit, the Scoliosis Society and
the Alzheimer's Society and the Middle School Drama Clubs raised
funds for Derian House Children's Hospice.
