Local Primaries SHINE at Bolton School

Saturday, 10 November 2012

More local schools and more pupils than ever are getting involved in the SHINE project at Bolton School this year.

Forty five Year 5 pupils from twelve primary schools in the local community will benefit from the resources and experience of teaching staff at Bolton School. All the girls and boys taking part are Gifted and Talented pupils who have shown high levels of motivation and yet many of them do not, ordinarily, have access to such an opportunity.

The aim is for children to be challenged and inspired whilst having fun and learning. They study a mix of traditional subjects such as English, Maths and the Sciences but are also introduced to more unusual offerings such as Japanese, Psychology, Ceramics, Drama, Business Studies and Food Technology. This year will also see them enjoying a free trip to Jorvik Viking Centre in January.

Bolton School teacher and SHINE organiser, Miss Olivia Sullivan, said: "We are delighted to be running the SHINE project for another three successive years at Bolton School, with more pupils and schools involved this year from our local community. The pupils have already had a ‘Burning Bonanza’ session in Chemistry and there is a range of subjects on offer with specialist staff in Senior School, including five modern languages and ceramics. SHINE offers a chance for Gifted and Talented Year 5s to experience subjects they may not have encountered before and both staff and sixth formers, who act as mentors on the project, delight in watching the pupils develop and progress over the course of the programme.”

All sessions are free for the participating children, the costs being met equally by Bolton School and the SHINE Charitable Trust. The programme will culminate with a celebratory graduation dinner held at Bolton School in February 2013 for children, parents and teachers.
