Music Ensembles Perform at Local Schools

Friday, 05 July 2013

The Bolton School music ensembles often go out to perform at local schools as part of Community Music, and one such concert in partnership with Bolton Music Service was given by the Joint Junior Concert Band at St James CE Primary School, Farnworth.

The band, directed by Mr Dawkins, performed six pieces which included ‘Supercalifragilistic’, ‘The Simpsons’, ‘You Raise Me Up’, ‘Latin Fire’, ‘Hey Look Me Over’ and the finale, ‘YMCA’. This last item was thoroughly enjoyed by the whole school and they joined in with the actions led by one of their teachers. Some very good solo performances were given by Charlotte Johnson, Sally Cowling, Hannah Rayner, James Stevens, Rachel McGinty, Tiggy Blackwell and George Blackwell, all of whom demonstrated the various instruments that make up the concert band.

Another concert of the series was given by the Joint Training Orchestra, directed by Mrs Hampson and Mrs Moore, at Ladywood Special Needs School in Little Lever. This ensemble has developed superbly over the last two years and it gave a strong performance of ‘Mattachins’, ‘Portsmouth’ and ‘Danse Macabre’. The concert also featured a flute trio – Edward Sandford, Arun Kumar and Dominic Hardy - and soloists James Stevens, Sam Reilly, Alex Ramwell, George Morgan and Steven Prescott. One of the highlights was when Mrs Hampson picked some pupil volunteers and a member of staff from the audience, to come and conduct the orchestra. They were excellent and showed real promise much to the delight of the rest of the audience. As is now becoming the custom, the orchestra was asked to play an encore as the children filed out of the hall, back to their classrooms.
