New Chapter for Children’s Fiction Awards

Wednesday, 05 June 2013

Bolton School, under the direction of Mrs Linda Frew, will be overseeing a new initiative, the “Bolton Children’s Fiction Book Award”.

Mrs Frew, along with other librarians at Bolton School and from schools from across the region, is currently busy reading books in order to draw up a shortlist for the Autumn Term. The event will be officially launched by Brit Writers’ Award Winner, Sufiya Ahmed at Bolton School on 4 October. After that, children in Years 7 and 8 from across the borough will be encouraged to read and vote for their favourite shortlisted books.

Mrs Frew said: “I was so disappointed when the Bolton Children’s Book Award stopped.  Having a focus for reading, topics for discussion and feeling that they had a real influence on the outcome of the award, meant that the pupils got so much out of it.

The awards ceremony was a big event for our pupils; meeting the authors and being able to ask them questions was a real treat. Students who are now in the Sixth Form have fond memories of the books they read for the award and are keen to lead discussions with groups of younger children next year.

We are hoping the new award ceremony will be a bigger event than ever.  Participating schools from across the region will bring their pupils to a day of author workshops, talks and Q & A sessions. The award announcement will be compered by Joe Craig who is not only a previous award winner, but also a spellbinding speaker.

And so, we librarians are all looking forward to seeing how our hard work of short-listing books will enable pupils to have a great time being involved in discussions, voting, blogging, acting, making films and, let’s not forget, reading books and discovering brilliant new authors.”

The winner will be announced at an event at Bolton School in June 2014, attended by pupils from participating schools and compered by previous Bolton Book Award winner Joe Craig. Children will have the opportunity take part in workshops and talks led by authors and have their books signed. The event replaces The Bolton Children’s Book Award.
