Platinum Award for Joint Jazz Band

Sunday, 16 November 2014

The Joint Jazz Band travelled to Altrincham Grammar School for Boys to take part in the National Concert Band Festival’s annual North Regional Festival. The band, led by Miss Fiona Berry, entered the competition in the School Big Band Class and impressed the adjudicator with their excellent performance.

The Jazz Band opened their slot with ‘Hit the Bricks’ by Gordon Goodwin. This was a great, upbeat piece to begin with, and the adjudicator commented, “There was some very neat articulation and good dynamics, making for a very stylised rendition. There were also some daring solos with lots of energy.”

Swing piece ‘City Dock’ by Scott Ragsdale was also well-received, with the adjudicator commenting that it was good to have some swing-style big band music in the competition. The trumpet section gave a particularly good performance during this piece, and the trombone solo was very enjoyable.

‘Mask of the Chili Pepper’ by Doug Beach gave several members of the band an opportunity to shine with duo and trio solos, and the band’s drummer played a nice “break” in the middle of the piece.

The final piece of music, ‘Lip Service’ by Andy Scott, was played with lots of energy, drive and motion, with the adjudicator commenting that this was an exciting performance! The saxophone solo also received praise here.

The Jazz Band’s first-class performance netted them a Platinum Award in their category. This is the highest award that can be granted by the NCBF adjudicators and indicates an excellent performance overall, from the rhythmic accuracy, balance and dynamics to the tone, interpretation and improvisation.

Along with their Platinum Award, the band also won an invitation to participate at the two-day Thirtieth Anniversary National Festival, which will be held at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, in April 2015. This prestigious event will certainly be something to look forward and work towards for all of the musicians involved.
