Each year Bolton School plays host to an instrumental workshop, and this year it was the turn of the piano.
The piano workshop was directed by Jonathan Middleton who teaches piano at Chetham’s School of Music and at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior Department. The event was for all piano students, from beginner to advanced, and Music students from local secondary schools were also invited to join Bolton School students for the day.
The day included three sessions – beginner (up to grade 2), intermediate (grade 3-5) and advanced (grade 6 upwards). Each session began with a presentation from Jonathan followed by three or four pupils taking part in a master class. Piano pupils from both divisions watched the session which was most appropriate to them. The workshops were followed by a piano recital given by Jonathan later that evening in the Arts Centre for pupils, parents, families and friends to attend.
Last year Craig Ogden directed a classical guitar workshop and the previous year members of the Northern Chamber Orchestra directed a day dedicated to woodwind. These events have been very inspirational for both Bolton School pupils and pupils visiting from other local secondary schools.
