Sharon Daniel to Compete for the Title of Child Genius

Wednesday, 16 July 2014

Sharon Daniel, a Year 7 pupil in the Girls’ Division, has been selected to take part in Channel 4’s Child Genius. Sharon is one of the twenty extraordinary children who have been selected to compete for the title of UK’s Child Genius of the Year 2014!

The competition has been organised in association with British Mensa, and the TV series will document the lives of the children and their families as they progress from one round to the next and take on their highly intelligent peers. From the naturally gifted to the highly competitive, the second series of Child Genius will reveal the highs and lows of being one of Britain’s brightest 5 - 12 year olds.

Most of the children who will appear in the programme have IQs in the top 0.01% of the country, so even getting through the selection process is a great achievement.

Sharon won a place on the programme after putting forward an application, and she is certainly worthy of it. She has already proved herself an exceptionally gifted competitive chess player, despite only staring to play four years ago! Not only is she a member of the Bolton School and Manchester Chess Teams, she has also played internationally for the England U11s' Team. In the past academic year, she has competed in the World Youth Chess Championships held in Dubai, where she came 80th of the 146 players in the Girls' Under 12 category. She also played for the England team in September in Montenegro, and took part in the European Schools' Championships in Kavala, Greece, in June. She is one of the best British female players in her category, and has won the AJIS Chess Tournament multiple times. She was crowned the U11 English Youth Chess Champion 2013.

Sharon's Headmistress at Bolton School, Sue Hincks, said: "Sharon is a very hard working and intelligent girl and we have seen how competitive she can be when she plays chess.  We look forward to watching her take on a different kind of competition in the programme, and wish her the best of luck!"

The first episode of Child Genius will be on Channel 4 at 9pm on the 20th of July, and will continue on the following three Sundays.
