"I can’t recommend this school highly enough. I have seen my three boys pass through the Boys’ Division and all have achieved outstandingly well."

SHINE Returns for the Fifth Year Running!

Saturday, 18 January 2014

Eleven local schools and 46 pupils will be taking part in this year’s SHINE project at Bolton School. The project dedicates eleven Saturday mornings to widening pupils’ learning and challenging them with the possibility of higher achievement – all while having fun!

Bolton School teacher and SHINE organiser, Miss Olivia Sullivan, said: "We are delighted to be running the SHINE project yet again, with eleven schools taking part including some new ones! SHINE offers a chance for Gifted and Talented Year 5s to experience subjects they may not have encountered before. Both staff and sixth formers, who act as mentors on the project, delight in watching the pupils develop and progress over the course of the programme.”

The pupils study a mix of traditional subjects, but are also introduced to more unusual offerings which are unlikely to be covered in the normal curriculum. For example, this year’s SHINE sessions will include four modern languages modules in Russian, Spanish, French and Japanese.

When asked what else they have to look forward to, Miss Sullivan added, “There will be an extra focus this year on teaching the pupils the habits of good learning and thinking – Habits of Mind – as used in our junior girls' school. Two learning and thinking skills will be promoted in every SHINE lesson here this year. We also have two sessions on the Vikings in the run up to their trip to DIG in York in March, where they will learn the basics in archaeology.”

The sessions are free for the participating children, and the programme will culminate with a celebratory graduation dinner held at Bolton School on Saturday the 5th April 2014 for children, parents and teachers.
