"When I return to Bolton School to talk to pupils about entrepreneurship, my message is to 'go for it'. This is an attitude that I had instilled in me during my time at the school where my curiosity was fuelled and I became interested in ideas."

Smart Bra Talk for D&T Students

Monday, 26 November 2012

The Girls’ Division Design & Technology department welcomed Professor Elias Siores from Bolton University to speak to a group of Year 8 – Year 13 girls. Professor Siores told the girls about his invention: a breast-screening smart bra which allows users to detect the earliest stages of breast cancer.

Professor Siores explained to the girls how the bra can detect cancer before the tumour can develop and spread into the surrounding areas. He went on to describe how his invention can also evaluate the effectiveness of any breast cancer treatment that the wearer is undergoing. Through his slide show he made the girls aware of how his department at Bolton University has used microwave technology alongside new developments in textiles to produce a smart bra prototype.

The girls listened with great interest and as a follow up they will return to the D&T department in a couple of weeks to debate the issues raised by Professor Siores.
