"I remember my days at school vividly and with great affection. Bolton School has a great tradition in the liberal arts. I've always acted for the love of it and this first love was inspired at Hopefield, the school theatre."

Young Minds Stimulated by MFL Experience Day

Wednesday, 11 February 2015

Eighty five budding junior linguists from 14 local primary schools enjoyed a day absorbed in modern foreign languages at Bolton School.

The Year 5 pupils followed a carousel of seminars, designed to stimulate their interest in foreign countries, their culture and their language. The day also encouraged and assisted local primary schools to incorporate Modern Foreign Language teaching into their curriculum.

Small groups of girls and boys had fun as they took part in 35 minute workshops, gaining an introduction to the language and culture of seven different countries and peoples. They utilised the Girls’ and Boys’ Division Senior Schools’ language labs and classrooms, allowing them to benefit from expert equipment and teaching from experienced languages staff, including native speakers.

The children were taught basic vocabulary in the sessions, including how to greet one another, how to count and how to hold simple but essential conversations. There was also an emphasis on learning about different cultures and this was reinforced by a Language Quiz.

At the end of the day, having enjoyed lessons in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian, French, German and Spanish, the children were presented with certificates for taking part and a Brainbox kit, which allows children to learn languages in a fun way through 10 minute brain challenges.

Miss Samantha Tomlinson, who helped organise the event, said: “The aim was to awaken a love of languages in young people, and inspire them to want to learn about other cultures, people and the languages they speak - judging by the enthusiasm and enjoyment shown by the children I am confident that this was achieved!”
