"I can’t recommend this school highly enough. I have seen my three boys pass through the Boys’ Division and all have achieved outstandingly well."

Youngsters Enjoying Chance to SHINE at Bolton School

Monday, 14 March 2016

Fifty Year 5 children from 13 primary schools in Bolton have been enjoying the SHINE: Serious Fun on Saturday mornings programme, which is up and running for a seventh year at Bolton School.

The fun but challenging programme offers a chance for local Gifted and Talented primary school pupils to develop and stretch themselves and to experience subjects they may not have encountered before. Whilst there are traditional lessons in Mathematics, the Sciences and Humanities, pupils are also introduced to subjects they may not have experienced, including Food Technology, Drama and languages such as Latin, Russian, Spanish and Japanese. Over the ten sessions, course participants are also taught “Habits of Mind” which imbue them with two learning and thinking skills each session. The sessions are conducted by Bolton School teachers who share their expertise and are ably assisted by Sixth Form mentors.

Coordinator of the Saturday morning sessions, Katie Wrathmell, said: “It is always richly rewarding for teachers and Sixth Formers to watch the pupils develop and progress over the course of the programme. The intention is to expose them to new concepts and new knowledge and to stretch them beyond the normal confines of the curriculum.”

When asked what else they have to look forward to, fellow Coordinator Sarah Gunshon said: “There are lots of new interesting sessions this year, including Music, Mandarin, Philosophy and Outdoor Pursuits. They will also be visiting the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and enjoying hands-on workshops.”

The sessions are free for participating children, and the programme will culminate with a celebratory graduation dinner held at Bolton School on Saturday 16th April for children, parents and teachers.
