As well as the informal links Bolton School has with the many
primary schools across the North West, the School also coordinates
a series of annual events for primary school girls and
boys to attend. The events enable local youngsters to
spend time in our school, be instructed by our highly qualified
staff and enjoy a day using our facilities and resources in events
that span our curriculum. Included within many of the events is
also the opportunity for the accompanying primary school staff to
enjoy some INSET, courtesy of our staff, on the related curriculum
area.
The events that are running during the academic year 2011-2012
are now confirmed below. We hope that there will be something for
everyone! If you would like to register your interest for any of
these events, please e-mail Sarah Gorner, Primary Liaison
Coordinator; (sjg@boltonschool.org), with
the name and address of your school and an e-mail contact. This is
not a firm commitment at this stage, but you will be sent details
of the event nearer the time and asked to confirm your attendance
then. Unfortunately there are restrictions on numbers for some of
the events. If you would like any more information about the
programme, particularly if you are new to these events, then please
contact Miss Sarah Gorner using the e-mail address above.

Of these many events, the jewel in the crown is our 'SHINE:
Serious Fun on Saturdays' project for Year 5 children from the
immediate locality, organised in partnership with the SHINE Trust
(www.shinetrust.org.uk);
this scheme is explained in full below.
The motivation behind our roster of primary liaison events is
chiefly our desire to build goodwill between Bolton School and
local schools. We believe that Bolton School should play a central
role within our local community; that a truly successful Bolton
School must be an integral part of Bolton; and that Bolton School
must not become remote from its community. These beliefs, along
with the conviction that Bolton School and its many surrounding
primary schools can benefit and learn from regular engagement with
one another, means that we will continue to build our primary
liaison events in the years ahead. Of course, all of these
events could not be staged were it not for the support, time and
effort offered by a wide range of Bolton School teaching staff.
SHINE alone involves over thirty teachers giving up their Saturday
mornings and the amount of organisation involved in staging the
other set-piece events is noteworthy. The willingness of the Bolton
School staff to commit their time to such extra events shows the
commitment of our institution to building strong and successful
partnerships with other schools in the north west.
'SHINE: Serious Fun on
Saturdays'
The 'Serious Fun On Saturdays' scheme at Bolton School is run in
partnership with the SHINE charitable trust (www.shinetrust.org.uk) and
aims to encourage Year 5 pupils (both boys and girls) to
participate in fun, educational sessions run by Bolton School staff
on Saturday mornings each year between November and February
(excluding school holidays). The scheme is aimed at pupils who are
able, have shown a high level of academic engagement, or are
perhaps of limited means and who would benefit from furthering
their educational development by attending our inspiring sessions.
The programme of activities is firmly focused on pupil enjoyment
and participation and it encompasses a wide variety of curriculum
areas, as well as other less familiar activities; the 2010/11
programme is listed here as
an example. The scheme culminates with a graduation dinner held in
School at which participating pupils, their parents and their
teachers celebrate the children's success.
All applications for Bolton School's SHINE programme must be
made through a child's primary school. Any primary school wishing
to become involved should contact Miss Louise Dickinson, SHINE
Coordinator, at: cld@boltonschool.org
