The future is looking very healthy for Physical Education A
Level as it moves on to A2 for the first time!
The subject was launched at A Level last September by Mr
Johnson, Head of PE, and since then it has proved to be a
successful addition to the Boys' Division curriculum. The number of
students choosing the subject is growing fast and there are now 12
students in total, with 8 currently studying PE at AS Level. There
has already been a great deal of interest from the present Year 11
to sign up for next year's course, and a taster session is being
held in the Sports Lecture Room on Friday 9th
October.
Students studying PE choose a number of activities to
participate in and also gain experience in coaching and officiating
the activities to develop their understanding and appreciation of
coaching points, skills, rules and the application of
tactics. They examine physiological, psychological,
socio-cultural and historical factors that underpin sporting
performance. Sixty five percent of the course content is
theoretical.
There are no specific requirements for entry into the course,
although Grade A or B in Biology would be an advantage. An obvious
background and interest in sport is essential.
The PE course will help students progress into Sports Science
and Sports Studies and, further down the line, into careers in
leisure and recreational management, physiotherapy, coaching, the
teaching of Physical Education, lecturing and sport
administration.
