Old Girl Launches Fifth Year of KPMG Summer Internships

Monday, 02 February 2015

Former Girls’ Division pupil Katie Clinton returned to the School to launch KPMG’s summer internship programme to Sixth Form students. This flagship scheme is exclusive to Bolton School and has run for the past five years, headed by Katie herself.

Katie is now one of the thirty partners at KPMG’s Manchester office, and is in charge of the Financial Services Audit team across the North West. She was joined by her colleague Graham Carney, who is an Associate in KPMG’s Corporate Finance department.

They talked to the Sixth Form pupils about KPMG and what each of the different areas of this professional services firm actually does, before moving on to talk about the placement scheme.

It is first and foremost a fantastic opportunity for two Sixth Form pupils to experience what it is like to work for one of the ‘Big Four’ Professional Services firms in the UK. The KPMG internships are open to applicants in the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions, and one boy and one girl in Year 12 will have the chance to experience working in a corporate environment for four weeks during the summer holidays. The successful pair will work with the audit and corporate finance teams under Katie and Graham, spending two weeks in each department and learning about how these areas of business work.

The application process is rigorous, and exactly the same as it would be for school leavers or graduates applying to the company: this is therefore a great opportunity for students to gain a valuable insight into the real-world job application process. For the duration of the internship, the two pupils will gain valuable work experience in a corporate environment, which will be a great addition to their CVs.
