Rachel Flanders, who last year became the youngest person ever
to row the Atlantic, now has her sights firmly set on rowing for
Great Britain in the Olympic Games.
Rachel was one of the Atlantic Angels, a four woman crew that
took part in the Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race, from
December 2007 to February 2008. The women spent 74 days in a 29
foot boat, Silver Cloud, as they rowed from La Gomera, in the
Canary Islands, to Antigua, in the Caribbean. You can read the full
story
here.
Once back on terra firma, Rachel did not wait long before
getting back in the water, joining Hollingworth Rowing Club, near
Rochdale. She now rows in a woman's eight and trains four times a
week. Her next challenge is the Henley Regatta in the summer when
she will compete against teams from across the country.
Talking about her future, Rachel said: "My long term ambition is
to get into the Great Britain team so I am getting started now. I
am looking at possibly the 2016 games."
Rachel is currently fitting her rowing in around revising for
her AS Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Her
plan is to study Engineering at University but she readily admits:
"I have been looking at universities which are good for rowing, not
just for engineering."
