BBC Features Old Girl Astrophysicist
Monday, 19 August 2019

Old Girl Dr Becky Smethurst (Class of 2008) and her YouTube channel have been featured on the BBC News. Dr Smethurst is a Junior Research Fellow in Astrophysics at Christ Church College, Oxford University. Her YouTube videos cover all kinds of space-related questions and she hopes that they will help to encourage more young people into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers.
Speaking in the BBC clip, she says, “I wanted to be someone that people really felt like they had a connection with to the world of research and to an actual scientist that’s working on the cutting edge of research right now.”

Earlier this year, Dr Smethurst returned to the Girls’ Division to talk to pupils in Years 10 to 13 about her work as an astrophysicist and hopefully inspire some of them to pursue a career in STEM.
