Careers Support for Current Pupils

Perspectives Lectures

This virtual lecture series, which began in 2021, invites Old Girls and Old Boys of the School to speak to an audience of pupils, staff and parents of both Divisions, as well as to Alumni, local schools and members of the community, about their professional experiences.  At each themed lecture, each Alumnus presents a potted history of their career after leaving School before the floor opens for questions.

Women and World of Work Talks

These virtual 20-minute talks aim to introduce students to the variety of career opportunities available to them from the range of inspiring Old Girls and Boys who deliver them. Including a Q&A session, the Women and World of Work Talks provide an insight into a variety of job roles, with students then encouraged to complete further research.

A to Z of Careers

A newly established series, the A to Z of Careers talks aim to provide our students with an extensive insight into a range of sectors, and to inspirational Old Girls and Boys through a presentation about their industry, followed by a Q&A  session. Over the course of time, students will receive the full ‘A to Z’: supporting them to make informed careers choices and the opportunity to connect with the speakers.

Interviews and 1-2-1 careers advice

During Sixth Form, students are given the opportunity to prepare for life beyond Bolton School with mock interviews or 1-2-1 conversations with Alumni. Year 12 are invited to be interviewed by a volunteer to aid the preparation for work and university interviews, followed in Year 13 by course-specific mock interviews for university.

International Women’s Day

The Girls’ Division runs a biennial careers event to mark International Women's Day, where Old Girls from a range of sectors are invited back to School to inspire the current generation of girls with their achievements and experiences. The day aims to support girls to broaden their horizons, raise their aspirations and challenge ‘the fear’. Boys’ Division mark the occasion with a keynote assembly address.

Mentoring

Old Boys' Mentoring Scheme

The Old Boltonians' mentoring scheme is provided by a group of Old Boys keen to pass on their experience to recent leavers, enabling them to leverage the knowledge and contacts of the Old Boy network – for free - to their professional advantage. The scheme is offered to all young Old Bolts seeking support and guidance on their journey into work.

Old Girls' Mentoring Scheme

The Old Girls’ Association mentoring scheme offers young Old Girls the opportunity to gain 1-2-1 mentoring – for free - from a fellow Old Girl, who can impart their knowledge and offer their support to mentees considering their career options post-graduation and as they move up the professional ladder.
