Patterdale Hall Wins Boot and Paddle Challenge
Friday, 09 March 2018
Patterdale Hall, Bolton School's Adventure Learning Centre based on the shores of Lake Ullswater, has won this year’s Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres’ (AHOEC) Northern Region ‘Boot and Paddle’ competition.
Representatives from outdoor centres across the Northern Region gathered on a blustery December afternoon to compete for the prestigious Boot and Paddle trophy. Hosted by last year’s winners the Bendrigg Trust, an amazing specialist centre for those with disabilities, the event included a running and cycling orienteering course on the fell-side and a further range of challenges including an assault course across zip wires and through tunnels with a friendly bucket of water! Unfortunately, the deteriorating weather put a stop to the canoeing aspect on grounds of safety.
Patterdale Hall was represented by Ann Hurst and Anthony Kavanagh who both played to their strengths to come out on top. Ann said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the event which was run in such a lovely, friendly manner by a fantastic outdoor centre. The weather was challenging but it made the event that little bit more fun.”
As winners, Patterdale Hall Adventure Learning Centre will host the event next winter from their site on the southern tip of Lake Ullswater. Within close walking proximity, the Hall has easy access to the lake, rock climbing crags and a vast estate, as well as Helvellyn being just a short walk away. A delighted Hall Manager Tim Taylor said: “We are yet to design our event but we are sure it will be one of the best yet!”
