GB U19s Squad Selection for Water Polo Player Thea
Friday, 20 October 2017
Thea Simpson in Year 12 has been selected for the GB U19 Women’s Waterpolo Squad following successful trials. This squad will be working towards European and World Championships next year. Thea will therefore need to continue to work hard to maintain her position in the squad in the months leading up to these important competitions, and will hope to be selected as part of the team that ultimately will represent the country.
In addition, Thea has been selected to undertake the Sporting Excellence Award by Swim England Waterpolo alongside her A Level studies. This award is a prestigious, government funded sports performance programme created by Skills Active in conjunction with the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of Professional and Olympic Sports. It provides a structured training and development route for talented young athletes, who have a real chance of excelling in their sport, either by competing on the world stage or securing a professional contract. It is therefore a very exciting opportunity for Thea.
During the October half term, Thea will also play for England with the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) team in an invitational tournament in Malta.
This follows an exciting summer of water polo for Thea. She spent the first two weeks of her summer holidays at an international water polo academy in Barcelona, which also included a one hour Spanish lesson every day. As a result of her involvement, she was invited by the academy to play in the Turbo Cup, an annual international tournament in Barcelona which took place in September.
Thea has been supported in her water polo endeavours by her coach, Mr Andy McGinty, who is also the Boys’ Division water polo coach and Women’s Coach at the City of Manchester Water Polo Club.
