Henry Ainscough, a Year 6 pupil at Bolton School Junior Boys’ School, enjoyed success over the half-term break, placing first in a downhill slalom at the Obergurgl Village Race. An impressive feat given he was only 10 years old at the time and the race included 242 children, aged 6 to 16 years.
Henry skies just 10 days a year in Obergurgl, Austria and last year he recorded second place in the same race, pipped to the post by an older boy who skied for Team Zurs. This year he returned eager to win the entire race. However, competition came from a teenage girl from Scotland in his class who skies 4-5 times a week and Henry thought his hopes were dashed. To everyone's surprise he got the best time of the day. Mum and dad said: “We are very proud of him.”
Henry started skiing in Obergurgl two days after his third birthday and can now ski anywhere in Obergurgl and Hochgurgl, on and off piste, apart from the valleys which require avalanche technology. He can ski ice, powder, moguls and jumps. He has also skied in Verbier, Deer Valley and St Anton.
