A Great Hall audience of parents, family and teachers was hugely appreciative of a wonderful Christmas Carol Service delivered by the Junior Boys of Bolton School.

The evening opened with Nathan Pierson singing the atmospheric first verse of Once in Royal David’s City before he was joined by the Upper School Choir and then the entire gathering for this rousing opening to the evening. Ed Goodfellow began the first of several readings, drawing on Luke v26-33; he was followed by well-delivered biblical, poetical and traditional Christmas readings from Oliver Hatton, Dave Patel, Kyran Chitre, Jacob Keld, Nathan Pierson, Suhayb Valli, Eesa Chariwala, Kai Jepson, Isa Khan and Adam Winter. There was a moving rendition of Infant Holy and charming interpretation of Heaven Bell-a-ring by the Lower School Choir. This was followed by the hymn See Him Lying on a Bed of Straw and the Carols This Little Babe and Ding Dong Merrily, sung rapturously by the Upper School Choir. The Lower School answered them with a fine rendering of Star Carol before the whole audience sang O Little Town of Bethlehem.

The Chamber Choir delivered its own stunning version of Three Kings and Carol of the Bells before the Whole School Choir sang This Child. There was a special singing of Silent Night with verses sung in Mandarin, French and German as well as in English. The Upper School Choir delivered a flawless Shepherd’s Pipe Carol ahead of the Whole School singing of Sussex Carol and the splendid evening of music drew to a close with the Chamber Choir singing A Christmas Blessing and a stirring rendition, sung by all, of O Come, All Ye Faithful!

The festive evening closed with a prayer and benediction and there was a retiring collection for Save the Children.
