"At a time when we are often told reading is in decline, I can’t tell you how much pleasure the Bolton Children’s Fiction Award gave me (and all the other authors)."

Boys Pick Brains of Bob the Builder's Creator

Wednesday, 28 March 2012

Bolton School welcomed author and illustrator Curtis Jobling to talk to boys in years 6, 7 and 8 about his work in animation, publishing and illustration.

Curtis is the designer of the characters and sets of the BAFTA winning BBC show Bob the Builder, as well as being the creator of CBeebies' Raa Raa the Noisy Lion and the award winning Frankenstein's Cat. He is also the author of the Wereworld series of books.

Curtis ran animation and illustration workshops with the Year 6 boys, showing them how to draw Bob the Builder step by step and getting them each to draw their own. He spoke to the boys about his love of film, books and animation and showed them how he creates his characters and brings them to life. With the Senior Boys' pupils he led art exercises and creative writing challenges. He also read from his new book, Shadow of the Hawk, the third in the Wereworld series, and pupils had the opportunity to buy signed copies of his books.

Head of English in the Senior Boys' Division Mr Richard Griffiths said: "Curtis did a superb job enthusing the boys about reading. His presentation was fascinating and enjoyable and he engaged us with stories of his background in animation as well as discussing his recent fiction. Many of the boys were inspired by him and will be reading his books in the near future."
