Carol Song Fills the Night
Thursday, 10 December 2015
Bolton School Junior Boys’ Carol Service, held in the Senior School Great Hall, proved a joyous occasion as 200 boys aged 7 to 11 years filled the dark December evening with Christmas Carols, old and new.
Daniel Heather opened the evening with an accomplished solo singing of Verse 1 of Once in Royal David’s City, he was then accompanied firstly by the Upper School Choir and then by the whole congregation for the remaining verses. The Lower School Choir demonstrated their own singing abilities with an equally fine rendition of Away in a Manger. A Strings Trio heightened the Christmas mood with a jaunty rendering of Jingle Bells before the Hall united in singing See Him Lying on a Bed of Straw. The Upper School Choir’s A Virgin Most Pure was again matched by the Lower School Choir’s rendition of Carol of the Children, with the Recorder Group performing a flawless Christmas Medley in between the two carols.
Throughout the evening, there were opportunities for different groups to shine. The Year 4 Choir took their chance with a stirring interpretation of Verse 3 of O Little Town of Bethlehem and the Chamber Choir offered up compelling versions of Balulalow and the traditional Puer Nobis. The whole school then delivered a moving Twentieth Century Carol before boys showed their linguistic prowess, singing the first three verses of Silent Night in Chinese, French and German respectively before the audience was on its feet again to join them for the final two verses.
Upper School Choir voices rang out clear in the singing of Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day before uplifting whole school renditions of traditional Carols, The Holly and the Ivy and O Come, All Ye Faithful embellished with full audience participation.
The evening’s music was interspersed with a selection of poignant readings, including Bible stories from Luke Chapters 1 and 2 and Isiah Chapter 9, as well as a mix of traditional and contemporary readings including A Week to Christmas, Minstrels, Christmas Bells, Everywhere, Everywhere Christmas Tonight and Before the Paling of the Stars.
The evening culminated with a final prayer and benediction from Mrs Faulkner, Head of the Boys’ Junior School.
