Hashir Sapra in Year 6 has been selected for the England Under 11s Chess Squad. He started playing chess when he joined the Junior Boys’ School in Year 4, and has since developed and improved as a player.
He did well enough in a recent chess tournament to be invited to the England trials. He had to play carefully and analyse each game at the trials in order to score as many points as possible, with the hope of earning enough to achieve a place on the team. Throughout the competition, there was the added pressure of knowing that members of the English Primary Schools’ Chess Association (EPSCA) were watching the matches and seeing how each of the competitors performed.
Hashir was delighted and very proud to find out that he had been selected to join the Under 11s squad.
Talking about what he enjoys about playing chess, he said, “I like going to tournaments, and doing activities and making new friends at the tournaments. One of my friends who I met at a tournament is in the England team as well, but he’s in the Under 12s now.”
