Hospice to Benefit from Park Road Fun Run
Friday, 23 May 2014
In spite of inclement weather – and a downpour as the boys made their way to the Senior School Levels – the Park Road pupils’ spirits were not dampened and they were bouncing with excitement to start the race! There was a really wide variety of costumes on show: superheroes such as the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Spiderman were very popular choices; a few boys donned dresses and wigs; a number of Harry Potters and Where’s Wallys could be spotted in the crowd; there were two Minecraft characters, complete with square heads, Mario and Luigi, and even an astronaut!
Headmaster Stephen Whittaker who took part in the run himself said: "The boys have been raising money through a charity fun run for many years and this year the school chose Bolton Hospice as the recipient of the money. At the start of each year the School Council discusses the charities they would like the school to support and the boys vote for the charity they feel should benefit every year. Many of the boys have family or friends connected with the hospice and it was therefore an obvious choice. In addition, the hospice is only round the corner from school and feels like our neighbour.
The fun run involves the boys being sponsored for dressing up and running alternate laps of the athletics track with a partner. The run has huge support from our parental community and often raises over £4000, with the boys running around 3000m. The occasion is a great event and thoroughly enjoyed by all despite the hard work.
We hope to invite representatives of Bolton Hospice into school to receive a cheque once the final total is known."
The boys completed as many laps of the Levels as possible before the end of the day, and were really pushing themselves to run at their best throughout. Despite being very tired by the end of the race, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event from start to finish – especially when the rain eased and the sun made an appearance shortly after the start!
