Macbeth Brought to Life for Junior Girls
Tuesday, 21 September 2010
Bolton School Year 5 and 6 girls took part in a drama Workshop with the Young Shakespeare Company, who brought the play 'Macbeth' to life for them.
Young actors worked with the girls to help them understand the story, language and characters, while performing scenes and encouraging the girls to take part and discuss what they see.
A storyteller and four Young Shakespeare Company actors put on the promenade-style performance in Hesketh House Hall, using costume and props to tell Shakespeare's story of ambition, guilt and revenge. The actors involved the girls in recreating scenes from the play including the meeting between Macbeth and the witches, the royal banquet at which Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost and the thrilling battle in which Macbeth comes face to face with his greatest enemy Macduff.
During the two hour session the storyteller enabled the girls to become actively and imaginatively involved in the play through a carefully structured range of drama and language activities. The girls were encouraged to think about the motives, thoughts and feelings of the characters and explore the language of Shakespeare.
