Maltese Adventure for Young Gymnast

Georgie Sykes from Year 4 has taken part in an international gymnastics competition in Malta over the summer! She has been doing gymnastics since she was four years old and trains for five hours every week with Bolton Gymnastics Club.
Over the summer holidays, twenty-six clubs from different countries attended a two-day international gymnastics event. Bolton Gymnastics Club sent out a team, and Georgie was invited to join them!
Although she has been involved in three or four competitions a year since she was four, this was her first time competing in the 8-10 age group – as she had her eighth birthday on the day the team left for Malta!
She competed on each apparatus in the four-piece competition and was awarded rosettes in each. The judges assessed her performances as ‘very good’ for floor, and ‘good’ for vault, beam and bars! She also received a trophy for participation.
Georgie’s mother Victoria Sykes said, “It was a fantastic environment. Malta, which is a small island, was filled with gymnasts everywhere you looked! We were very proud to be part of the competition. Georgie’s coach, Jessica Walsh is incredibly dedicated to the club and has produced an amazing team spirit and positive culture with the girls.”
Georgie’s next competition will take place in Preston in October. Her Club was hoping that later this year she would also be able to attend a national competition in Leicester, where gymnasts are identified for the national level. However, she is not yet quite old enough and will have to wait until she is nine before she can take part!
