Pupils Represent Bolton at the Manchester Youth Games

Having enjoyed success in qualifying rounds a large number of girls and boys from Years 5 to 13 at Bolton School have been representing the Bolton borough by taking part, and winning, in this year’s Greater Manchester Winter Youth Games. The competition saw teams from the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester competing in a wide range of sports.
An U10 swim team comprising Year 4 and 5 pupils from Hesketh House ran out joint winners with the borough of Trafford in their age group and Junior Boys’ School pupils took third place in the same competition. The tournament had been a mixture of individual and relay races and the results were decided by the best times. The teams had progressed after recording excellent performances in the qualifying competition at Bolton One in January.
Senior School boys also enjoyed success in the water by winning the U13 Junior (Years 7 and 8) Water Polo Competition held at the Manchester Aquatic Centre, where Year 10 boys helped out by volunteering as stewards and officials. Coach Mr Howard said: “There was a fantastic atmosphere in the pool with teams from all over the Manchester area. The standard of play and competitiveness throughout the day was second to none. At the end of a successful day of water polo the Bolton School team triumphed, winning the final game 6-3 against Crompton House in their age group. Having won the same competition last year, it gives them a nice double. Well done boys!”
Having taken part in the opening ceremony of the Youth Games at the Etihad Stadium, the School’s Senior Rugby team were runners up in the first U18 Rugby Union Sevens Tournament at the Games, held at Broughton Park RUFC. An early 22-5 loss to Altrincham set the team back, but Bolton then went unbeaten in the next five matches to finish in style. During the five wins Bolton scored 113 points only conceding 14 points, but with Altrincham remaining unbeaten, the boys finished runners up.
At the Sugden Sports Centre the U15s’ Volleyball Team went one better than last year by claiming the Silver medal, a great achievement considering the standard of the opposition and the relative inexperience of the Bolton boys. A team from Year 8 was also entered into the U13 Volleyball Tournament.
PE Teacher Mr Mark Chilton said: “With hundreds of pupils across all age groups and abilities competing, the Games were a great success with Bolton School continuing their strong association and success at the games. A big well done to all who competed.”
