All of the pupils at the Junior Girls’ School were treated to a dramatic and hilarious retelling to Roald Dahl’s The Twits from professional storyteller John Kirk. He works with primary schools, libraries, museums, festivals and poets such as Michael Morpurgo and Terry Deary to bring stories to life.
John was at the School to host the Bolton Children’s Fiction Award Ceremony. Guests from Beaumont Primary School were joined by the Bolton School Junior Girls in the Arts Centre for a special session with John while visiting senior school pupils and Bolton School’s Year 7s enjoyed workshops with three of the shortlisted authors.
From the very beginning, John’s version of The Twits held his audience enthralled. The simple costumes and different voices to differentiate characters, along with a few key props and his energetic delivery, made watching this classic tale from Roald Dahl thoroughly enjoyable for everyone, whether they knew the story already or not. Some of the highlights of the performance were pupils being recruited for the upside-down monkey circus, and John as Mr Twit painting the audience with his big paintbrush and pot of ‘glue’!
The Arts Centre was filled with laughter for most of John’s performance. Listening to him retell The Twits in his own unique fashion was a wonderful experience for all of the children, and certainly one they will not forget.
