The Year 3 girls had a fantastic afternoon exploring the subject of healthy eating with The H Factor.
Mrs Riley and Mr Scialpi-Sullivan from the School’s Catering Department brought a variety of fruit and vegetables for the girls to try, including different types of melon, blueberries, figs, kiwi fruit, starfruit, dragonfruit, black radishes, Chinese pears that looked like potatoes, and even some edible flower petals! They also had lots of different herbs and a large chunk of ginger, which the girls could smell.
The girls were amazed that all of these different fruits and vegetables, along with many more, could be delivered quite easily by the School’s suppliers. The event really opened their eyes to the rich variety of healthy foods available, as well as encouraging them to try new things.
The girls also took part in creating a large collaborative poster: they all drew images of healthy foods or cut out pictures from magazines and stuck them onto the paper. They were also involved in making origami ‘poppers’ which they then used to quiz each other about healthy eating.
However, perhaps the most exciting part of the afternoon for the girls was making their own pedal-powered smoothies on the smoothie bike!
They were able to choose their own ingredients and what juice they would like before hopping onto the bike and pedalling as hard as they could to turn the mixture into a real smoothie. The girls really enjoyed trying out new the fruits and drinking their smoothies. They had a lot of fun throughout the afternoon, as well as learning more about the importance of ‘The H Factor’.
