The Junior Girls filled the Girls’ Division Senior School Great Hall with wonderful music as they put on their Christmas show, Witnesses. Performed as a ‘Christmas TV Special’ with special presenters, gospel choir the Tinsel Toppers, live percussion band the Percussionistas, the girls put a modern twist on the nativity story.
The two presenters interviewed the various characters from the Christmas story over the course of the performance. Mary and Joseph, the Shepherds, the Kings, the Stars and the Angels all recited poems based on their experience of the first Christmas, interspersed with songs by Margaret Carpenter about each group of characters. The Stars and Angels performed dances at the front while the Tinsel Toppers and Percussionistas sang about their role in the story.
The Junior Girls also performed ‘Dormi Dormi’, which they introduced as the lullaby that Mary sang to the baby Jesus.
As the performance drew towards a close, the girls performed a special piece for Headmistress Ruth Brierley, who is retiring at the end of term. They sang ‘Colours of Christmas’ by one of her favourite composers, John Rutter, and wished her a long and happy retirement.
They then lifted their voices for the final song, ‘That’s What Christmas Means To Me’, which brings together a number of Christmas songs in the chorus and made for a wonderful end to the girls’ Christmas performance.
