Dr Sanjay Sastry visited Hesketh House Junior Girls’ School to give the Year 5s an insight into his work as a specialist heart doctor. This was a great opportunity for the girls to see the relevance of the science work they do in school in a real life context. It was also a chance to remind everyone of the importance of healthy diet and lifestyle, to avoid medical problems as much as possible.
Dr Sastry brought footage of a procedure on a heart attack patient, and showed the girls how the artery had been unblocked. They learned that a balloon is used to widen a blocked artery and were able to inspect a stent. The girls were then given gloves and allowed to handle the surgical equipment used to save lives every day.
With some instruction from Dr Sastry – and a little imagination – they were able to unblock arteries themselves via keyhole surgery!
