The Bolton Branch of the Historical Association returns to Bolton School this September with a new programme of lectures for the 2026/27 academic year.

The lectures offer pupils, students and members of the wider community the chance to hear from historians and researchers speaking about subjects that often sit outside the usual curriculum.

The programme begins on Monday 14 September with Joanna Williams, who will present The Great Miss Lydia Becker: Suffragist, Scientist and Trailblazer. Her talk will look at the life and influence of Lydia Becker, one of the leading figures in the nineteenth century campaign for women’s suffrage.

On Monday 5 October, Dr Jon Hogg of the University of Liverpool will speak about Nuclear Test Veteran Testimony, Archives, and Nuclear Justice, drawing on his research into Britain’s nuclear past and the experiences of nuclear test veterans.

Paul Wright of the Battle of Winwick Society will visit on Monday 9 November to discuss The Battle of Winwick, August 1648, looking at the battle fought during the Second Civil War.

In December, Bolton School will host a heat of the Historical Association’s Great Debate. This year’s question asks: Can your local environment help us to understand national and global histories?

The programme continues in the new year, with lectures considering masculinity and honour in the age of Bridgerton, the lives and influence of Jewish women in medieval England, and sovereignty and accountability in Athenian democracy.

All lectures begin at 6.30pm in A33 in Bolton School's Girls' Division, with parking available in the Girls’ Division Quad. Lectures cost £20 for the year or £5 per session and are free for national Historical Association members and students.
