Joining the School in August, Miss Joanne Hewitt has greatly enjoyed her first few weeks as Bolton School Nursery's new manager. Reflecting on her career to date and her new position, she said:
"I have worked within the Early Years sector for 20 years in a variety of roles such as a nursery nurse, family support worker with health visitors, a childminder, deputy manager and I have worked within management for 11 years now. Early years is such a rewarding career seeing children learn and develop and preparing them for the transition to school.
In my time as a manager, I have set up and managed a Private Day Nursery and moved to set up 2 nurseries within a group as a Senior Manager. All of the positions enabled me to gain valuable experience and knowledge that has led to 4 outstanding Ofsted inspections.
I feel to be the best manager, the recipe is happy staff = happy children = happy parents, making the best environment to thrive in. Going the extra mile for the children and families and being able to adapt to every situation is so important to gain trust and build relationships.
An outstanding and knowledgeable staff team, who are all as passionate as you are, make the best asset to a nursery, and this is the case at Bolton School Nursery. Everyone really wants to make a difference to the children's early years' experience. Learning and growing with every experience you encounter and reflecting on your own practice all the time is essential to outstanding practice and that's what everyone does, always continually improving all the time.
A Nursery Manager is a unique role in which you have to have numerous skills and abilities and be ready to wear many hats on a daily basis. These could be a manager, trainer, role model, counsellor, child carer, problem solver, first aider, customer service expert to cleaner and sometimes cook! All of these with the children's safety, well-being and experiences at the forefront of everything that you do and I wouldn't change it for the world!
Coming to Bolton School is the career move I was waiting for. All the staff, and families and of course children have made me feel so welcome and I settled in so quickly. I feel very privileged to join such an outstanding setting with an outstanding team to support me who have so much knowledge and experience. I'm very proud to say I work here. Support for a manager can be hard but the network of support within the Bolton School community means I can focus on the most important thing - the children and the experiences they gain whilst being in our care.
In the last 5 weeks I have been getting to know the staff and children and meeting all the families at nursery. We have been working on transitions within the Nursery and helping parents to support transitions to school and understand school readiness. Over the next few months I am looking forward to continuing to working alongside the school and creating links with the reception classes and nursery class. I want to focus on implementing more of the children, staff and parents' voices to enable us to continually improve the quality of the nursery and children's experiences with us. I look forward to the future with Bolton School Nursery."
