Tennis star Alfie King, a Y7 pupil in Bolton School Boys’ Division, has become a national Doubles Winner at Wimbledon. The 11 year old and his partner Finn Logue from Cumbria have won the Road to Wimbledon National U14 Challenge Finals’ Doubles competition.
Having triumphed at the County Finals, the doubles pairs went on to secure national success and Alfie now has his hopes set on returning to the iconic venue: “Winning the doubles is incredible. I didn’t think we would win it, at the end I don’t think I even realised we had won! We only decided to play together when Finn’s mum texted my mum a couple of days before the competition. I’ve loved playing at Wimbledon, it’s so different, I’ve never played on courts like this at all. Playing here instead of watching is very cool. I am following in the footsteps of Novak Djokovic, I’ve loved it.”
Former British number one Tim Henman who attended finals day, was impressed with what he saw from the country’s next generation of tennis stars: “It’s very special for the young people to get to play on grass at Wimbledon,” he said. “To get the opportunity to come to Wimbledon and play on grass is huge, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There is no doubt that the standard is improving. It has improved all the time over my time involved and you can see there’s some really good young players developing.”
