Badminton Boys Reach National Final
Tuesday, 20 March 2012
A team of four Bolton School boys has achieved the remarkable feat of progressing through to the English Schools' Badminton Championship final, joining eight other regional school winners.
Following their triumph at county level, the boys (in the Years 10/11 age section) played against four other schools, encompassing the winners of Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and Cheshire, at Broadway Leisure Centre, St. Helens to compete for the right to represent the North West region.
The opening match against Birkdale (Merseyside) proved to be crucial - Akul Pankhania, playing No.1 singles, came from 19-15 down to win 21-20. Similarly, Henry Smith, playing No.2 singles, refused to wilt under the pressure to secure another 21-20 victory despite facing a 20-16 deficit. The final match score was a tight 3-2 win. Another comeback was registered against Ullswater (Cumbria) when from 2-0 down in games, Henry won his singles match and the two doubles' pairings of Akul and Ashley Lam and then Henry alongside James Blyth also won their games for another 3-2 victory. Further wins against St. Michael's (Lancashire) and Upton-by-Chester (Cheshire) meant that the team won all four matches to complete a memorable day of badminton.
The final is to be held at Sherwood Forest Center Parcs, Rufford, in late April. In the younger age group (Years 7/8/9), the team won two matches and lost two matches to gain third place. Gold and bronze medals were presented to our senior and junior teams by Tom Wolfenden, the current England U-19 champion.
