The Bolton School Boys’ U16 Badminton team are the North West Champions, putting them through to the Center Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships final for the second year running.
Following their triumphs at local and county level, the boys played against four other schools, encompassing the winners of Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and Cheshire, at Broadway Leisure Centre, St. Helens to compete for the right to represent the North West region.
Resounding 5-0 victories against the Lancashire, Cumbria and Cheshire champions saw Bolton through to the final against a very strong team from Birkdale High School who are the Merseyside champions. The match was decided by a thrilling final rubber which could have gone either way, but Henry Smith and Archit Sharma held their nerve to win by the narrowest of margins. Gold medals were presented to year 11 pupils Akul Pankhania and Henry Smith, and year 10 pupils Giri Nandakumar and Archit Sharma by Tom Wolfenden, the England U-19 triple national champion.
The boys now go on to represent the North-West, facing eight other regional school winners in the final at Sherwood Forest on Sunday 21st April.
