At the start of the 2014 cricketing season, last year’s U13s team had some unfinished business to attend to before they could turn their focus to the next round of matches. The team were unable to play the Lancashire Cup Final match against Merchant Taylors at the end of the 2013 season.
Bolton School and Merchant Taylors finally met in beautiful sunshine at Formby Cricket Club to play the delayed Lancashire Cup Final on the 6th of May.
Bolton batted first and reached a disappointing 88 all out. Slusarenko top scored with a steady 23, with Bowers reaching 15. The pressure of the occasion got to most of the Bolton batters, and they made some poor decisions both technically and tactically during the innings.
However, the relatively low target of 88 never looked in danger as Thakrar and Southworth started well with the ball. Sweeney provided a glimmer of hope for Merchants with a score of 23, before being dismissed by Southworth. Jesani took three wickets, as did Sykes, with Thakrar taking two wickets and two catches. Captain Southworth took two wickets in total with Nandalan supporting by only going for 9 runs in 4 overs. Merchants finished on 76 all out in an exciting conclusion.
Winning the County Cup was fully deserved. The improvement shown by this team throughout the previous season has been clear to see. One defeat as a Year 8 side to Leeds is in stark contrast to the same team’s results from Year 7. There has been clear development and progression in terms of numbers representing school, team morale and leadership. All boys contributed throughout the year either with bat, ball or with outstanding fielding.
We wish the team, now in Year 9, the best of luck in their upcoming matches.
