Wednesday, 02 February 2011
A team of five Bolton School boys beat off the competition to become the U14s badminton County Champions, and are now set to represent Greater Manchester in the regional round in March, with the prospect of making the final of the National School Championships.
The U14s team, consisting of Akul Pankhania (9a), Henry Smith (9f), Muhammed Seedat (9f), Giri Nandakumar (8e) and Archit Sharma (8b) joined twenty other schools at the George H Carnal Leisure Centre, Trafford to compete for the right to represent the county at the North West final. Two victories in the group stage led to a tough quarter-final match against Failsworth School, eventually winning the tie by four points to one. A semi-final draw paired the team against local finalists, Rivington and Blackrod High School, where another 5-0 scoreline was secured. The players displayed impressive ability and assurance to achieve a memorable victory in the final against St James' School, Stockport, again without losing a game. They now eagerly await the Regional Round to be held in early March.
The boys progressed to the County round following their success as tournament winners in the local round held at Smithills High School, and on their way to becoming champions they have won an impressive 23 out of 25 matches.
