A team of crack Mathematicians from Bolton School has placed 21st out of 1700 schools in this year’s UK Maths Challenge Trophy. Having won the Regional Heat at The University of Manchester, Eddy Backhouse and Matthew Schaffel from Year 9 and Krishnan Ajit and Alex Gao from Year 8 travelled to the Royal Horticultural Halls in Westminster, London along with 87 other schools.
The format was much the same as the regional heats - but at a higher level - with a shuttle round against the clock, a mathematical crossword round and a problem solving round. The boys did remarkably well to claim an overall finishing position of 21st; the winners were Westminster School. This is a springboard event for future IMO representation in the World Mathematics Competition.
The Team Maths Challenge is run by the UK Mathematics Trust, a charity which aims to advance the mathematical education of children and young people. It is the third time that Bolton School boys have qualified for the National Final of the Team Maths Challenge.
