Bolton School Under 14 Rugby League team created history for the
town as they beat Haydock High School, St Helens number one seed,
in the Carnegie Champion Schools Competition.
It is the first time a school from Bolton has competed in
Champion Schools RL and to beat a team from a town that is known
for Rugby League is a huge achievement for the school. The 22-20
victory means Bolton progress to the Quarter final stage of the
County competition - only a few games from Wembley!
After initially going behind, Bolton sprang back to take the
lead going into the interval. Haydock High came out all guns
blazing after half time, regaining the lead, but Bolton weren't to
be defeated and replied with two quick tries, bringing the scores
to 20-20. With 4 minutes to go Bolton made another clean break down
field, forcing a penalty under the posts that took Bolton through
to the next round. Community Rugby League Coach John Duffy
commented: "What an absolute thriller of a game! The
commitment and determination shown by all the squad was breath
taking, there are some very talented boys in this group, to stick
to a game plan at any level for a full game is very difficult but
this squad breathes discipline and composure and are a dream to
coach, credit must go to the boys and their school"
