Children Get Ready to SHINE at Bolton School

Forty-one Year 5 pupils from eleven local primary schools are all set to SHINE at Bolton School as the SHINE: Serious Fun on Saturdays programme launches. The project, which runs over ten Saturday mornings in the Girls' and Boys' Divisions, aims to widen pupils’ learning and to challenge them with the possibility of higher achievement.

Bolton School teacher and SHINE organiser, Miss Katie Wrathmell, said: "We are delighted to again be running the SHINE project at Bolton School. It offers a chance for Gifted and Talented children to experience subjects they may not have encountered before. We believe that pupils learn best whilst enjoying themselves and consequently the activities are both stretching and fun. This event is one of the highlights in the School calendar and both staff and students, who act as mentors on the project, delight in watching the pupils develop and progress over the course of the programme.”

The children study a mix of traditional subjects, including Maths, English, the Humanities and the Sciences, but are also introduced to more unusual offerings which they will not be exposed to through the normal curriculum. This year’s sessions will include languages’ modules in Russian, Spanish, French, German and Japanese.  The children will also undertake sessions in Food Technology, ICT, Classics, DT/Art and Drama.

Fellow organiser, Miss Sarah Gunshon added, “Like last year, we will place a focus on teaching pupils the habits of good learning and thinking – Habits of Mind – a construct used in our junior girls' school. Two learning and thinking skills will be promoted in every SHINE lesson here this year.”

The sessions are free for the participating children, and the programme closes with a celebratory graduation dinner held at Bolton School on Saturday the 21st March for children, parents and teachers. Pupils’ activities and progress will be updated weekly on Twitter @Shine_BoltonSch
